This book has touched me on a very high spiritual level. My own questions are not all answered , but she has led the way for me.
I have different challenges with my children, but this was very helpful to have a balanced perspective on how to handle certain situations with light and love.
It took courage to bare all, sharing her raw emotions, thoughts and decisions. Thankfully, this mother's love for her son, her family, her God give us hope for ourselves.
The author openly shares her struggle, her faith, but most importantly, her unwavering love for her son and God. Marked up this book with a lot of highlighting. There is a lot to learn from this wise and noble mother.
Knowing this family personally made this book even more touching to read. I know that they are a family who has always strived to love and understand one another and that love has always been outstretched to everyone around them. Jackie Smith does a phenomenal job at teaching the importance of seeing oneself and others as a child of God, facing our fears of things we don't understand by seeking to actually understand, and also recognizing the opportunity to enlarge our hearts and be filled with love. Spencer is an amazing young man and I love that Jackie shared her experience as his mother. Everyone should make it a point to read this!!!!!
I knew the Smith family well during my teenage years. I spent many evenings at their home playing cards, ping pong, and having handstand contests. I always admired the Smiths for the loving and welcoming spirit in their home. Spencer was just a toddler when I left for college and I haven't kept in touch with the family as much as I would have liked to and I was unaware of this story. Jackie's story as a Mormon mother of 7 children, and more particularly this story is of her experiences raising a gay son, is a quick and powerful read, helping me through my continual evolution of charity and love for all people. This book reminds me we are all children of God, all have struggles, and all need to be and feel loved.
I so appreciate this book-- I thought I'd heard most mormons' opinions on homosexuality, but this provided a great parent's perspective that I hadn't read before. I didn't explore or accept my own sexuality until I was older, but as a bisexual kid growing up in the Mormon church, I often felt uncomfortable when other members would discuss gay marriage or other related issues in a negative tone, although I certainly did not understand why. The repeated mantra to hate the sin, love the sinner did not ring true to me, especially when those around me used such negative tones when speaking of homosexuality. The author's way of maintaining an open and honest dialogue about the paradoxes of the LDS church with her child was wonderful, especially when navigating her own opinions and feelings in contradiction to the church's teachings. I loved her approach to unconditionally loving him by seeing him through the eyes of God. Overall, a great read, and I highly recommend it.
Loved it! An honest and real account of a religious family that wrapped their hearts around what their minds struggled to understand. It inspired me to be a better parent and made me more aware of the importance of the individual love and care that goes into parenting. And the divine love that God has for me and all His children. Thank you for sharing your story.
